Master Thesis - The use of Open Source within autonomous vehicles
Master Thesis & Research Opportunities - Gothenburg, Sweden
Open Source in the business world, just a cumbersome compliance process or a competitive opportunity…….
The automotive industry, with a few exceptions, has until now not been utilizing Open Source Software development to a very broad extent, and the limited work within Open Source has so far mostly been related to reuse of work done by others.
Within the vehicle automation industry we have recently seen a move to release some of the code to the community, possibly as a result of recognizing that companies that want to move fast and break things in other industries need to collaborate and give back.
At the same time when coding with open source, it is needed to ensure that one are not using components with known vulnerabilities and in order to build secure products, developers need to use tools that identify which open source components they have in their environment, and prevent the use of components that have associated vulnerabilities. In contrast to risks requiring solid processes, open sourcing the product can create new business opportunities and the speed and quality of product development can improve taking help from the community outside the company.
For Zenuity it is crucial to find new ways to work more efficiently as a software company. To stay competitive, and especially with new actors showing interest for the autonomous industry, Zenuity continuously need to develop the way of relating to Open Source. Using Open Source can create great opportunities, but it can also cause many risks and a cumbersome overhead.
